After starting kc.com, I decided to take up reviewing RM2k/3 games again. Here are the reviews:

Runelords by Kentona
Sagawind: Episode One by trance2
Starlancer Six by BadLuck
SouL by HolyDragoon

RM2kfics

Several years ago I experimented with just the storytelling aspects of RPG Maker 2000. I took two of my ancient fanfics (we're talking, like, the "I just played FF7!" days here), downloaded a mountain of SNES rips and set to work re-telling the stories using just RM2k cutscenes.

The results were two "RM2k movies", about twenty minutes each, which were released to spectacular reviews. When these bad boys were unleashed on Gaming World the first time, they had more perfect 10/10 reviews than any other project on the site. (GW now uses a screening system and is more discriminating on what is considered a "review".)

What I learned from these two projects was how to use a cutscene to tell a story, rather than just slogs of text. So while KC is still full of dialogue marathons, the characters and world are more animated as a whole. This is to say nothing of all the little tips and tricks I picked up a long the way relating to cutscene development.

MarandaMaranda is a story based on Final Fantasy VI, set several months before the events of the game. It's about a small family that lives in the town of Maranda, how the town comes under Imperial rule, and the consequences of the occupation. It doesn't spoil anything from FF6 (being a prequel and all) but if you haven't played the game you might not know some of the characters. There's only one major graphical glitch that I know of. See if you can spot it!

With His Father's SwordWith His Father's Sword is the very, very first piece of fanfiction I ever wrote. It's based on Chrono Trigger, and was especially tricky to make at some points due to the incompatibility between CT's sprites and RM2k's mapping engine. This story is about a young girl in Truce some 15 years before the beginning of CT, and her terrible secret. I was pretty proud to have one of the few CT fics that wasn't completely invalidated when Chrono Cross was released. There are a few big-ish CT spoilers.
